ABOUT US
A SOUTH PACIFIC/WWII THEME
Hangar
Hotel is the name, back in time is the game. Based on Fredericksburg’s early
aviation and rich military past, a recreation of an old WWII military hangar,
familiar to many aviation and history buffs, is operating at the Gillespie
County Airport in Fredericksburg, Texas. This one of a kind, fifty room hotel
sets the standard for style and romance of the period.
The
architecture of the Hangar Hotel resembles, most closely, an old wooden hangar
at Brooks AFB in San Antonio, Texas. The rounded roof design, however, is
reminiscent of many WWII hangars throughout the United States. Other Texas
hangars visited, and WWII hangars researched through photo files, contributed to
the design. Our fine Historical Museum and great Nimitz Museum provided valuable
information regarding early flight and WWII activities in Fredericksburg and the
surrounding area.
This
fifty room, boutique is based on a concept that a hotel
should be more than just a bed and shower. When you check into this hotel,
you not only get a room, you get an experience, a free ticket to days gone by,
and an escape from your everyday routine.
A
similar Fredericksburg "experience" is the highly popular, Fredericksburg
Brewing Company. This internationally known establishment not only serves
some of the finest German Brews and food, but is housed in a historical,
refurbished 1890s rock building complete with fireplace, old wooden
ceilings, antique lighting, copper, brass and stainless brewing equipment, and
old enclosed biergarten. The twelve “Bed & Brews” located above the
establishment, are reminiscent of the German Inns located above their regional
brewing establishments. The experience is enhanced by quality service, German
music and live entertainment. The Brewery is located in the heart of the
historical shopping district’s golden block. You don’t need a passport to
experience Germany at this location.
The
Hangar Hotel will be enjoyed by all, even those who aren't necessarily pilots. Of interest to everyone, landings, take-offs and air traffic can be viewed from the hotel
observation deck. Teak furniture provides comfortable seating
under the shaded balcony area.
The Lady Bird Johnson 18 hole golf course, is available to golfers just across the Gillespie County Airport runway from the Hotel.
Additional park activities including basketball, volleyball, hiking, jogging,
swimming, tennis (six lighted courts) and picnicing are available at the park as well.
Unique
to the Hangar Hotel, is an Officers'
Club where guests can relax and visit in the evening hours. The Club has
a fireplace, grand piano, pool table, full bar, and unique leather lounge
chairs. Adjoining the Officers Club, is the Briefing Room, a small meeting room
that can also be made available for Birthday Parties and special events.
The
décor and furniture of the all the guest rooms are of the WWII period. Custom
made chairs of the era, are constructed of soft, comfortable leather. Sleigh beds, with rattan inserts, and complimentary furniture are of
mahogany. All rooms are king size, nonsmoking, with no provisions for pets.
The
Hotel is further complemented by a “South Pacific” atmosphere, suggested by
large Palm Trees and landscaping. The palm trees, closest to the newly
constructed parking apron and taxiway, shade the billboard and search light.
The airport rotating beacon and the vintage water tower were both imported to the site. The water tower is the only one in the county, and was erected on this site by the use of two 100 ton
cranes
The
ten foot tall WWII searchlight is on display next to the Hotel. On the ramp in
front of the Hangar Hotel, is a 1946 North American Navion, built by the same
company that built the P-51 Mustang. This fully flyable, sliding cockpit
aircraft has Navy markings and a brilliant, patriotic red, white and blue paint
scheme. This airplane, along with the pin-up art billboard, provides an
excellent photo opportunity. Viewing the ever-changing aircraft on the flight
line, of course, is educational, as well as entertaining.
Located
next to the Hangar Hotel, are the Airport
Diner and Conference
Center. The Diner is a great place for breakfast and lunch while viewing
arriving and departing aircraft. Please call to confirm Diner hours.
